| Core Plates and Inserts The standard core plate is a flat sheet of metal with a diamond pattern on one side. It is used only when making full-sized blocks (i.e., blocks that are the same size as the mould box) and one core plate must be inserted prior to placing soil into the mould box. The core plate serves two purposes: 1) it creates a texture on one side of the block to provide better adhesion of the mortar, and 2) most importantly, it enables the easy removal of the block from the machine and prevents damage to the block when it is being transported to the drying area. When making full-sized blocks for use in walls, it is recommended that two core plates are used, one on the bottom and one on the top. This imprints a pattern on both sides of the block which helps to ensure a good mortar bond between courses. If a block with smooth faces is prefered, simply place the core plate diamond-side down into the block press.
