Core Plates and Inserts
The standard core plate is a flat sheet of metal with a diamond pattern on one side. It is used only when making full-sized blocks (i.e., blocks that are the same size as the mould box) and one core plate must be inserted prior to placing soil into the mould box. The core plate serves two purposes: 1) it creates a texture on one side of the block to provide better adhesion of the mortar, and 2) most importantly, it enables the easy removal of the block from the machine and prevents damage to the block when it is being transported to the drying area. When making full-sized blocks for use in walls, it is recommended that two core plates are used, one on the bottom and one on the top. This imprints a pattern on both sides of the block which helps to ensure a good mortar bond between courses. If a block with smooth faces is prefered, simply place the core plate diamond-side down into the block press.

Half Block Inserts
Half block inserts enable you to make two half-sized blocks in a single compression cycle. Because of its shape and design, it is absolutely essential that the correct amount of soil is placed inside the mould box and that careful attention is paid to the Maximum Compression Indicator during the compression cycle. If an insufficient amount of soil is placed in the mould box, the blocks will be weak and very likely to fall apart upon removal from the machine. Overcompressing, especially when an insufficient amount of soil is used, may result in damage to the half-block insert. These factors are discussed in detail later in this manual.

Special Purpose Inserts
Special purpose inserts are available to produce blocks with channels for reinforcing bars and making interlocking blocks. Shown below is a channel insert, allowing "rebar" to be inserted between courses to provide extra strength to the wall.
